On September 16 Apple released iOS 9 to the public and made the upgrade available to everyone with an iPhone 4s or later, iPad 2 or later, iPad mini and the 5th generation of iPod Touch or later. Here are a few things you should know about iOS 9.
Proactivity and intelligence
The new iOS is more proactive and intelligent than ever before. It tries to learn the user’s habits, so that it can assist as much as possible. For example, it recommends places the user might like and opens apps before the user needs them. Siri has also become more helpful.
Improved apps
iOS 9 improved a lot of built-in apps including Maps, Notes and Mail. Maps now has cool features like Transit mode and Nearby search.
The Transit mode adds public transport routes to the app, so that now you can view stations and individual lines for busses, subway, light rail, train and ferry. The Transit mode is only available for a handful of cities and areas, though.
Nearby search lets you search Apple Maps by category, such as Food, Shopping, Drinks, Services, Travel, Fun, Transport, and Health.
Under-the-hood improvements
Apple iOS 9 has a few significant under-the-hood improvements. The battery life is now optimized and extended by another hour (or more if you use the Low Power mode). In addition to that, iOS updates don’t take as much space as before. App install file sizes have also been reduced thanks to a feature called app thinning.
As for iPad users, they will be pleased to know that iOS 9 introduces split-screen multitasking.
