Many great app developers often face the same problem: they develop what is bound to be a killer app or game, test it and make sure it’s perfect, launch it on the App Store and then… nothing. There are very few downloads for no apparent reason. But there is a reason and a very simple one – lack of a strong marketing plan. Combine that with feeble ASO efforts and you’ll see the best app or game ever perform very poorly on the App Store.
App marketing is something that you should never overlook. The days of simply submitting a game to the App Store and seeing downloads soar are gone because of tough competition and the sheer number of apps out there. That’s why you need to start researching and analyzing the market at the same time as starting developing your app.
A great thing to begin with is collecting data on the usage of similar apps. You’d want to know everything about your competitors and their users, so that you can attract those users to your app. Even if you have limited resources, you should try to find the time for that. Remember, huge game developing companies have whole teams of marketing experts doing all that research and planning campaigns.
The next thing you should do is create a detailed marketing plan that includes backup strategies in case some of your main strategies don’t work. We’ve written quite a few posts about app marketing, so make sure you browse our blog for more information.
And last but not least, always remember to act creatively and never forget to address user feedback. That way your killer app will not fail like thousands of others.
